If the ignition on an Audi A6 C6 (4F) will not switch on and the steering wheel stays locked, the electronic steering column lock (ELV) is often faulty. The fault memory then usually shows 00288 for the N360 actuator. Check the battery and connectors first. If the ELV itself is faulty, the original part can often be repaired.
This guide comes from ElektroTech GmbH, a master-certified vehicle workshop (Kfz-Meisterbetrieb) in Viersen, Germany, that tests and repairs vehicle electronics, including the A6 4F ELV. It is written for owners and workshops.
What does the ELV do in the Audi A6 4F?
The ELV sits on the steering column. A small motor pushes a bolt into the column and locks the steering wheel when the car is parked. When you start the car it pulls the bolt back. The ELV is part of the immobiliser: the car only enables the ignition once the ELV has unlocked. That is why a faulty ELV puts the whole car out of action.
Which symptoms point to a faulty ELV?
The ignition will not switch on and the engine does not start.
The steering wheel stays locked, or no longer locks after parking.
The instrument cluster shows a steering warning.
You hear the motor whirr or click when trying to start, but the steering does not unlock.
At first the fault is only occasional, and after several attempts the car starts after all.
The typical fault memory entry is 00288 Steering Column Lock Actuator (N360), for example with "no signal", "implausible signal" or "defective". Ross-Tech's diagnostic database lists exactly these two outcomes: ignition power will not switch on, and the steering column will or will not lock (Ross-Tech wiki 00288).
What should you check before removing it?
A fault code shows where the system sees a problem. It does not prove that the ELV is the only faulty part. So check these first:
Battery. A weak battery often cannot move the motor. Charge the battery or check the voltage before looking further.
Read the fault memory. Note the exact entry including the extra text. It helps with any later diagnosis.
Connectors and wiring to the ELV. Ross-Tech recommends checking the wiring to the N360 before replacing the part.
Do not force the steering wheel. Moving the wheel slightly while starting can take the load off the bolt. Yanking it is more likely to damage the mechanism.
Why is a new ELV such a big job on the A6 4F?
According to Ross-Tech, Audi does not supply the N360 actuator for the A6 4F on its own, only as part of the steering column. On top of that, on cars with immobiliser generation 4C or later, a new N360 has to be adapted to the car over an online connection to the manufacturer. Only a workshop with access to the manufacturer's systems can do that.
With a repair you get your own ELV back. No new part has to be adapted to the car, because none is fitted. Whether a basic setting or adaptation is still needed after refitting depends on the car. That work is only part of the job if expressly agreed, and a qualified workshop does it.
Some sellers offer emulators that bypass the ELV electronically. The mechanical steering lock is then gone as theft protection. Check beforehand whether that matters for your insurance.
Which ELV part numbers do we repair?
The A6 4F ELV is made by Marquardt. Our catalogue includes these part numbers, among others, each with the matching vehicles according to manufacturer data:
| Audi part number | Marquardt number | Vehicles per catalogue |
|---|---|---|
| 4F0905852B / 4F0910852 | 33530101 | A6 4F, 2004–2008 |
| 4F0910852H | 33530104 | A6 4F, 2005 |
| 4F0905852C | 33530201 | A6 4F Avant quattro, 2006–2007 |
| 4F0905852D | 33530102 | A6 4F Avant, 2008–2010 |
| 4F0905852F | 33530103 | A6 4F Avant, 2010–2011 |
The part number is on the sticker on the housing. If in doubt, compare the number or give us a call. If your number is not listed, try the part search. More Audi parts around the ignition switch and immobiliser are under Audi immobiliser repair.
How to send the ELV in
Get in touch. Call with the part number and the fault on +49 2162 8165472, Monday to Friday, 9:00 to 16:00 German time, in German or English, or send a repair enquiry. We usually reply within one working day and will tell you whether any other parts need to come along.
Have it removed. The ELV sits on the steering column under the trim. We recommend having a workshop remove it.
Pack it. Sturdy box, at least 5 cm of padding on all sides, protection against moisture and electrostatic discharge. Ship it insured and tracked.
Include the details. Part number, vehicle, fault memory entry, fault description, contact details and return address. Also mention previous repairs or an already opened housing.
We test the ELV on a test bench. We only repair once you approve, followed by a function test and tracked return shipping. More on packing and paperwork is in sending in a control unit, and the comparison with new and used parts is in repair or replace a control unit?
What to check before refitting
A repaired ELV only lasts if the cause does not stay in the car. Before fitting, have the battery, power supply, ground connections and the ELV connector checked. Corroded contacts or a battery that is always weak strain the motor on every start.
